MEET THE ARTIST

Lucie Gonella

Lucie Gonella is a multidisciplinary artist. She succeeds in the perfect union between creativity and modernity, bringing to life a unique and expressive style. Her works, sought after for several decades by institutions, art lovers and private collectors, embody the very essence of a pictorial personality who creates with audacity and freedom, preserving the poetic beauty of the image in all its nuances and disparities.

Born in 1957 in Quebec, in the heart of the picturesque county of Charlevoix, Lucie showed a deep love for the arts from an early age. Raised in a household where creativity was held in high regard, she was initiated by her mother, an exceptional multidisciplinary artist, through various forms of artistic expressions. Over the years, her artistic skills have continued to develop and assert themselves.

Innately curious, creative and driven

Driven by her creativity, passion and natural curiosity, Lucie began studies in visual arts at Cégep de Sainte-Foy, before continuing her training in graphic communication at Laval University in Quebec. After graduating in 1980, she worked in her field for a decade before moving to Chile in 1990. It was there that she gradually integrated painting into graphic art, significantly transforming her profession and career.

Art nouveau

Her efforts in the artistic field quickly bore fruit, allowing her to hold several exhibitions and be selected in various competitions. Art critics praised the technical and aesthetic maturity, describing her as an expressive, nervous and lyrical draftswoman, with a distinct penchant for Art Nouveau.

The late Chilean art critic Victor Carvacho (1993)

Member of the International Association of Art Critics, Victor Carvacho wrote this about me and I quote:

"The case of this painter represents a tremendous power of the return to figuration. There is no doubt here, she is part of the artistic movement "The New Figuration". This is not a return to archaic painting, but rather the continuity expressed in the recovery of the unity of natural beauty, with artistic beauty.

Unique to her, Lucie appropriates in her own way the movements of expression developed by the contemporary artist's vision: cubism, expressionism, geometric abstraction, and surrealism. The new figuration, the art of Lucie Gonella, is a creation of expressive and formal integration, dominated by idealized beauty, by the desire for dynamic expression and by the duality of the figuration-abstraction game. The maturity of the painter, from a technical and aesthetic point of view, defines an artist capable of using any techniques such as: acrylic, oil, watercolor, and various mediums including collages, Indian ink and other original combinations. Her works represent the profile of a pictorial personality capable of creating healthily, vigorously, freely and exemplarily to save the poetry of the image."

New challenge

After having lived and worked in Chile for five years, Lucie returned to Quebec in 1995, rich in experience and momentum that allowed her to successfully continue her artistic career. She presented her new works in Quebec, Toronto and the United States. Recently, she added the European artistic scene to the list of places where she exhibits.

The human figure

The human form dominates the themes of my work. My characters, depicted in various poses and engaged in various activities, embody my feelings, preferences, emotions, and much more. They are often integrated into abstract settings, vibrant with color. A recurring theme in my works is that of reflection, an indication of the importance I place on self-examination and contemplation. I invite my characters, and by extension, the viewers, to immerse themselves in contemplation of human nature, to appreciate the present, and to question their own existences.

Digital art

Always eager for renewal, Lucie turned to digital art in 2013, thus diving into a world of innovation and experimentation. It is with an unparalleled enthusiasm and passion that she continues this artistic adventure that began over 50 years ago. Through her art, she shares a deep emotional story, reflecting her experiences and her vision of the world, while leaving behind a rich and inspiring artistic legacy.

Words from those who’ve welcomed abstract art into their lives.

“Every day, I’m captivated by the calming energy that this artwork brings into my home.”

“I purchased Echoes of Silence from the gallery, and it instantly became the soul of my living room. Guests are drawn to it, but for me, it’s a quiet sanctuary in the middle of a busy day.”
